Butler Blue II's Super Bowl 2012 secret? He'd rather have a steak
Butler University's famed beast, Blue II, is going to get to try his charms on Victoria's Secret beauty Adriana Lima on Tuesday at Downtown's St. Elmo Steak House.
The English bulldog has been picked to film a segment of CBS' "Super Bowl's Greatest Commercials" with Lima, who models in one of the most popular spots. Show co-host Jillian Michaels will be on hand, too, according to Gary Critchlow, the show's executive in charge of production.
The pooch likely will be excited -- but probably more about being surrounded by St. Elmo steaks than by the Victoria's Secret model.
"No offense to her," said Michael Kaltenmark, Blue's caretaker. "Blue is going to be excited to be around all of that red meat."
Later Tuesday, Michaels and the film crew will head to Speedway, where they'll film another segment with IndyCar driver Graham Rahal at the Dallara facility -- the spot where the new generation of IndyCars is being manufactured.
For that, Michaels and Rahal will film around 33 race cars that are wrapped in the logos of NFL teams, according to Critchlow. (The production executive, who grew up in Pittsburgh, said he's already gotten a picture of himself in front of the Steelers race car.)
The show, which will air at 8 p.m. Feb. 1 on CBS and is built around popular Super Bowl commercials, allows the public to vote on their favorite (at cbs.com/superbowl). It is co-hosted by Michaels and Boomer Esiason.
Counting trash cans
Rolling Stone Publisher Matt Mastrangelo and Michael H. Provus, associate publisher, are determined to ensure their mag's first-ever Super Bowl bashes will rock.
So they dropped into town last week to attend to the details of the glitzy music events, scheduled Feb. 3-4 at Crane Bay event center, and do a little public relations.
For Mastrangelo, the trip was hi! s first to Indianapolis in about 15 years. For Provus, a North Central High School grad, it was a visit to the place where he grew up.
"It's just fantastic," said Mastrangelo. "It's a big enough city where you have all of these great attractions. It's small enough where you feel really comfortable."
When they weren't working at Crane Bay (551 Merrill St.), where Rolling Stone's bashes will take place, they holed up in the swanky Conrad Indianapolis. And Mastrangelo dined at St. Elmo.
"I had my shrimp cocktail, New York strip and the lovely mashed potatoes, and we've just been getting ready for our big rock and roll weekend," he said.
But the trip wasn't all fancy meals and swanky digs.
By Friday afternoon, the pair had pondered how many rolls of toilet paper and how many garbage cans would be necessary for the Feb. 4 Bacardi Bash (featuring LMFAO, Lupe Fiasco, Cobra Starship and Gym Class Heroes) and the Feb. 5 Rock & Roll Tailgate (featuring Jane's Addiction and The Roots and a yet-to-be-determined Indiana band).
The answer, as far as garbage cans go, is 40.
"It's those types of things that people don't see that can make or break an event," said Mastrangelo, adding that at one point, they were told it wasn't certain that 40 trash cans could be found as Indianapolis readies for Super Bowl XLVI festivities and hundreds of parties. "It's kind of like a big snowstorm, when you try to find a shovel."
Eventually, they found the trash cans.
But, like a lot of Super Bowl XLVI visitors, Provus and Mastrangelo still haven't booked Downtown hotel rooms for the weekend of their event.
Unless new plans are made in sold-out Indianapolis, they'll be staying near Indianapolis International Airport.
Getting fashionable
The wives of NFL football players -- and some of the pro athletes themselves -- will sashay down a catwalk at Saks Fifth Avenue on Feb. 3, two days before Super Bowl XLVI is played.
The reason: the Off The Field P! layers' Wives Association 11th Annual Fashion Show, which will benefit JT's Hand Neo-Natal Fund, an Indianapolis-based organization that aids families of critically ill newborns and preemies, and Peyton Manning Children's Hospital at St. Vincent.
The event is to start at 10 a.m., and the finale will include football players.
Celebrity chef Nikki Shaw, wife of Brian Shaw, Indiana Pacers associate head coach, will emcee the event with retired Indianapolis Colts linebacker Cornelius Bennett. And WFBQ-FM (94.7) on-air personality Laura Steele will be on hand to perform some emcee duties.
Tickets for tables of 10 are $5,000 and $7,500. For info, call (317) 509-9453.
